Working Principle
The 1.5SMC18AHR7G uses a unique bidirectional, unidirectional, or single line architecture based on the avalanche breakdown of reverse-biased PN junctions. Its working principle relies on the fact that when the Reverse Standoff Voltage (RSV) is exceeded, an avalanche breakdown of the junction occurs. This produces a low impedance path which allows a large surge current to pass through. The current then flows in the reverse direction until the voltage across the diode is reduced to the RSV.
The device provides protection against both ESD and EFT, using slightly different mechanisms. For ESD protection, the device clamps the voltage to a safe level when a voltage surge is present. For EFT protection, the diode provides an inductive delay for EFT pulses, so that they do not reach the circuit in time to cause any damage.
