This short lived avalanche is known as the clamping action of the diode. The surge energy is then dissipated as heat with a limited peak current passing through the device. When the surge energy has been absorbed, the diode recovers to its normal operating voltage.

The breakdown voltage of the 1.5SMC22A is 6.5Vdc at its maximum rated current of 15A, and its reverse standoff voltage is ≥1Vdc @ 5mA max. The 1.5SMC22A can absorb up to 15A for 8/20μs pulses, sufficient for ESD and EOS transient protection.

The 1.5SMC22A is ideal for applications where fast response times and extreme protection levels are required. It can be used in portable electronics, cellphones, telephones, automotive equipment, medical electronics and communication systems. The diode is available in a variety of packages, including leaded, unicoated surface mount and heat sink mount.
