Terminal Blocks - Headers, Plugs and Sockets

Terminal blocks refer to an arrangement of electrical terminals used for connecting electrical wires. They are either formed from a single piece of plastic, or they can also be formed from composite materials. For example, terminal blocks made from metal and plastic are referred to as "Compatible Terminal Blocks". It is also worth mentioning that terminal blocks that are designed to be used for high voltages are called "High Voltage Terminal Blocks". When it comes to the application field of terminal blocks, there is a great variety of applications. Generally speaking, terminal blocks can be used for power distribution, control circuits, industrial control systems and automation. In addition, they can also be used for connecting multiple circuits together in commercial and military aircrafts. Furthermore, terminal blocks can also be used in other applications such as marine and RV applications. It is worth noting that some terminal blocks also offer additional features such as EMI-shielding or mounting brackets which could be beneficial for those applications. In addition to application fields, it is also important to highlight the function and working principles of terminal blocks. Ideally, a terminal block should be able to connect or disconnect electrical circuits while maintaining a secure and efficient connection. Thus, terminal blocks incorporate specialized design features to fulfill this purpose and are tailored based on the application needs. For starters, terminal blocks come with a pre-configured and fixed wiring path which is generally referred to as the bridge. This feature aids in the connection and disconnection of the wire. At the same time, the bridge also helps to protect the wires against over-current or short circuit. The second important feature of a terminal block is the voltage rating. This rating is basically the maximum voltage that the terminal block can handle. Typically, terminal blocks are designed to handle voltages ranging from 24V all the way up to 1024V. Exceeding the voltage rating may cause the terminal block to fail over time, thus it is important to use the terminal block in accordance with this rating. Finally, terminal blocks also come with a dielectric strength which refers to its ability to withstand electrical arc or current. Generally speaking, most terminal blocks come with a minimum dielectric strength of 1kV. For higher voltage applications, the dielectric strength will have to be altered accordingly. In conclusion, terminal blocks are an essential component used for connecting electrical circuits. They come with a variety of application fields such as power distribution, control circuits, industrial control systems and even automation. Moreover, terminal blocks also come with several design features which makes it suitable for these application fields such as the bridge, voltage rating and dielectric strength. All in all, these design features enable terminal blocks to safely and securely connect and disconnect electrical circuits, thus making it an irreplaceable and essential component for any building, vehicle or device.
