Terminal Blocks – Headers, Plugs and Sockets are a type of electrical connection technology used in many industries and fields today. These electrical connectors are used to connect two or more wires to one or more other electrical components. They may be in the form of headers which allow for immutable connections between two wires or may be in the form of sockets which allow the user to make or break the connection between two wires as needed. Regardless of the type of terminal block, they share a common characteristic of providing comprehensive protection against the elements.Terminal blocks offer several advantages over traditional wire connections. The metal parts of the terminal blocks are designed to protect the individual wires from short circuits which may result from corrosion, contact with other wires or physical damage. These terminal blocks also provide protection against electromagnetic interferences (EMI) which can impact wired connections. In addition to providing these safety benefits, the use of terminal blocks can also decrease installation time. This is achieved by utilizing a quick disconnect system which facilitates connecting or disconnecting a wire from the terminal block.Despite the advantages terminal blocks possess, they are still limited in their applications. Because they are mostly reliant on physical contact to provide an electrical connection, they are not ideally suited for applications requiring high-frequency or digital signals. For those types of applications, modular jacks or miniature connectors (such as PCB headers) are usually a better option. However, terminal blocks can still be utilized in electric guitar effects pedals, for connecting audio speakers, or in power systems. The wires that power computer or networking systems are usually connected using terminal blocks.The general principle behind terminal blocks is that when the metal contact points make contact with one another they create an electrical connection. This principle is applied regardless of the type of terminal block as the contact points are created in one of two ways. The first way of creating a terminal block connection is to utilize a metal tab which is bent back onto the metal contact points on the block itself. The second way to create a terminal block connection is to use a screw terminal which tightens the wire or other contact points firmly onto the terminal block’s metal contact points. Terminal blocks still remain a popular technology as they are relatively inexpensive, their installation is relatively straightforward, and they provide a safe and reliable connection between wires and other electrical components. In higher voltage applications, safety switch disconnects or fuse boxes may be used in conjunction with terminal blocks to provide additional protection. Nevertheless, terminal blocks have been used in a wide variety of applications and must adhere to stringent standards such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories), VDE, CSA, GB, CCC, etc. as required by the specific application.
