Terminal Blocks - Headers, Plugs and Sockets

Terminal blocks or connectors are a common component in many electrical systems and assemblies. Terminal blocks, or plugs and sockets, are designed to provide electrical connections between two or more devices. 1. Headers

2. Plugs

Plugs are connectors with a male terminal that can be inserted into pre-drilled holes in the applications circuit board, or a female socket connected to a wire. Plugs are a popular choice due to their ease of installation as they do not require any wiring to be done. They are typically used when connecting components that are further apart than headers.

The connection formed by a plug is usually held in place by a screw or spring-loaded mechanism. The contact between the male and female terminal is generally more reliable than a header, due to the secure contact being made between the two parts.

3. Sockets

Sockets are connectors with a female terminal that can be inserted into pre-drilled holes in the applications circuit board. This makes them much easier to install than headers, as they do not require any wiring. Two metal contacts on the socket provide a secure connection with the male terminal of the plug.

Sockets are typically used when the connection needs to be removable, such as in test equipment or debugging systems. They are also popular for use in telecommunications applications, such as DSL and ISDN.

Working Principle

Terminal blocks work by providing a physical connection between electrical components, eliminating the need for soldering or crimping wires. This also provides protection against short circuits and reduces the risk of electric shock. The way in which a terminal block works depends upon the type of connector being used.
