The 1KSMB68A is a two-terminal, bidirectional Transient Voltage Suppressor device that works by redirecting and clamping any voltage spikes to a safe voltage level. It contains a junction diode in a hermetically sealed package with a large junction-to-case thermal impedance for excellent thermal management capabilities, enabling it to handle high power levels efficiently and quickly. It makes use of a nonlinear distribution of voltages and currents, which is responsible for its ability to provide protection against high surge voltage pulses.When the voltage spike exceeds the maximum breakdown voltage rating of the TVS device, the device’s junction diode heavily limits the current flow and clamps the voltage at a safe level. The increase in forward current through the diode causes it to become less resistive over time, and this in turn causes the voltage to be clamped at a predetermined level. When the surge voltage is below the breakdown voltage rating of the diode, it does not conduct and therefore does not clamp the voltage.Conclusion
