TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes, also commonly known as transorbs, are designed to protect vulnerable electronic systems by clamping transient voltages to protect against surges and spikes and suppress them to prevent destructive levels. The 1KSMBJ27 is a 150-W Peak Pulse Power (PPP), two-terminal transient voltage suppressor (TVS) and is specifically designed for lightning protection and ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection of low-voltage signal and data lines and sensitive components. Its low-clamping voltage and ultra-fast response time makes it ideal for applications such as cellular phones, portable radios, computer peripherals, and consumer electronics.The 1KSMBJ27 TVS diode is constructed from ultra-small ultra-fast avalanche breakdown (UAB) technology and is available in a small disk-shaped, surface-mount package with two terminals reverse-biased. It is rated for a breakdown voltage of 6.0 V, with a breakdown voltage range of 5.5 V to 6.5 V. It is designed to provide an increased protection for low-voltage signals and data lines. The 1KSMBJ27 features a peak pulse power rating of 150 W, a shielding voltage of 5.5 V to 6.5 V, a low clamping voltage of 8.5 V to 9.5 V, and a response time (from zero voltage to clamping voltage) of 30 nsec. The device can withstand up to 1 million ESD pulses with no sustained damage and provides up to 30 dB of near-instantaneous suppression. The working principle behind the 1KSMBJ27 TVS diode is an avalanche breakdown of electrons, which is triggered when the voltage at the junction of two materials reaches a certain level. When a transient surge occurs, its current and voltage are limited by the avalanche effect. When the avalanche voltage is reached, the device conducts a large surge current and will accept further electrical energy, which can be dissipated in the form of heat. The 1KSMBJ27 is suitable for transient voltage surge protection applications such as providing protection for RF communication and other data lines, AC power lines and sensitive inductors, and components in automotive electronic systems.
