1N2823A is a zener diode that provides true zener characteristics in a single package and operates over a wide temperature range. It is used for a variety of voltage protection, regulation and shunt regulation applications. The device has a defined voltage regulation point and temperature coefficient with an original variation of less than 20 mV from the initial nominal value over the temperature range of – 55 to 125 °C.

1N2823A has a wide range of voltage regulation options available, with the most common being 5.1, 6.2 and 6.8 V. It also features maximum 5 W power dissipation, high open loop gain and low temperature coefficient. All these attributes make the 1N2823A suitable to a wide range of applications including overvoltage protection, regulating sensitive circuits, supplying fast peak current outputs, stabilizing input signals and providing uniformity to a DC power supply.

The working principle of the 1N2823A Zener diode is based on a process known as Zener breakdown. The diode is constructed from a PN junction in a reverse direction and when the applied voltage is greater than the PN junction’s breakdown voltage, a current is allowed to flow through it. This current flow known as the Zener currents allows the device to regulate its own voltage drop across its terminals and hence, enabling the device to regulate voltage.

The Zener diode exhibits two modes of operation, namely the forward break-over mode and Zener mode. When the applied voltage is below the Zener breakdown voltage, the diode works in the forward break-over mode and the current is restricted to the leakage current. On the other hand, when the applied voltage is greater than the PN junction’s breakdown voltage, a controlled current flow is allowed and the device is said to be in the Zener mode. In the Zener mode, the voltage is regulated by the on-state current and its temperature coefficient.

The device is primarily used for protecting against reverse bias overvoltage such as he inductive spikes (ring waves) generated by relay coils. It offers superior protection when used as an ESD (electrostatic discharge) clamp as it has a low dynamic impedance which makes it compatible for use with high speed signal transmission. Since it features a low voltage drop, it can be used as an efficient voltage regulator.

Furthermore, it is also used in the field of high-voltage protection where it is used in transformer protection, relay contact protection and surge protection circuits. Apart from this, the 1N2823A is also used in the military and aerospace application where it is employed as a reference voltage source and voltage regulator.

The 1N2823A Zener diode is equipped with a high ESD protection that requires very little external components which makes it a preferred choice for usage in high volume assembly systems. Its low power consumption and no heat sink requirement simplify the installation process and makes it suitable for applications where space is a premium such as mobile phones.
