< h4 > Diodes - Zener - Single h4 >1N3317A is a type of diode from the single Zener diode family. It is used for a variety of specific applications, like voltage regulation, wave shaping, and overvoltage protection. Zener diodes are special diodes, recognized for their special characteristic of maintaining a stable voltage across its terminals when the current flow is constant.A 1N3317A Zener diode is the full name for this type of diode. It is an 18 Volt diode, with a power rating of 500mW (milliwatt). It features a voltage regulation range across its reverse breakdown voltage of 18V to 20V, allowing it to regulate voltage at wavelengths up to 20V as opposed to a single 18V. The total capacitance of this diode is around 7pF (picofarads). A standard 1N3317A Zener diode has an operating temperature between -55 to +125 degrees Celsius, or -67 to +257 Fahrenheit. Also, its junction temperature, or the temperature of the circuit when the diode is in operation, is maxed out at 150 degrees Celsius or 302 degrees Fahrenheit. The diode is generally packaged in a DO-41 plastic case style, and features dimensions of 44.5mm X 1.6mm, making it quite small compared to other single Zener diodes available in the market. It also has a black band of paint on the cathode side, to signify which side is which. 1N3317A Zener Diodes work by creating a reverse bias--essentially, the current is flowing in the opposite direction that it should. This allows the diode to, instead of shorting out the circuit, regulate the voltage and, through the constant current flow, maintain a reverse bias. This works by current passing through a diode, when the current reaches a certain point, and the voltage reaches the breakdown voltage, the current begins to flow in the opposite direction, creating a reverse bias, as opposed to a forward bias. 1N3317A Zener Diodes also have specific applications. Mainly, these diodes are used for voltage regulation, wave shaping, and overvoltage protection. Voltage regulation is when a Zener diode is placed in a circuit, and is used to maintain a steady, constant voltage across said circuit with the diode acting as an ideal voltage regulator. Wave shaping is a process wherein Zener diodes are used to alter the shape of a “wave”--essentially, a current passing through this diode will travel slower in the reverse bias than in the forward bias. This allows the diode to alter the shapes of waves, allowing for cleaner and more accurate computation than existed before. Finally, overvoltage protection is used wherein a single Zener diode is used to protect sensitive devices from overvoltage, that is, an excess of voltage in the circuit. Rather than passing through the device or component, the Zener diode is placed in the circuit and absorbs the voltage, preventing it from reaching the component and blowing it up, as most components and electronic devices cannot handle higher voltages.
