1N3323A Application Field and Working Principle
The 1N3323A are medium power zener diodes with a wide range of applications. Working Principle
The working principle of the 1N3323A is similar to the working principle of any zener diode. It is a junction diode operating in the reverse biased mode and behaves like a reverse biased diode. In this condition, it has a low reverse Leakage current, so it can handle high voltage. The zener diode acts like a voltage controlled resistor, with a fixed breakdown voltage. In this mode, the current through the diode remains constant, as long as the voltage across the diode does not exceed the breakdown voltage. When this voltage is exceeded, the current begins to increase exponentially.
When a voltage is applied in the reverse bias mode, the majority carriers (electrons) present at the anode drift in an attempt to reach the cathode and recombine with the minority carriers (holes). At a certain voltage, the electric field becomes so strong that the majority carriers are able to cross the depletion region with little or no hindrance and reach the cathode. This is known as the breakdown voltage and it is usually higher than the normal applied voltage. Once the breakdown voltage is reached, the current will increase exponentially, due to the avalanche effect.
