A 1N3347B is an axial-lead single Zener diode. It is a three-terminal semiconductor device that uses a reverse-biased PN junction to allow a small continuous current in the forward-biased direction. Designed for use as an components in voltage regulation, the 1N3347B is a type of breakdown diode which enables its characteristic Zener voltage rating to be obtained through an adjustable current.
At low current levels, the 1N3347B behaves as a P-type semiconductor. At higher current levels, the diode’s Zener voltage rating is reached. This voltage acts like a clamp, reducing the amount of voltage that can flow through the diode and regulating the voltage throughout the circuit.
The 1N3347B is suitable for a range of applications from electronic circuit noise suppression to basic Zener diode voltage regulation. In voltage regulation applications, the 1N3347B may also be used in conjunction with LED-based lighting, temperature controllers and device protection circuits.
The device also finds use in a range of consumer products, such as television sets, computer systems, home audio systems, and digital cameras. In such products, the 1N3347B can be used to regulate voltages ranging from 12V to over 500V.
In terms of working principle, the 1N3347B operates under the principle of negative temperature coefficient. A negative temperature coefficient means that, when the diode’s temperature increases, its resistance also increases. This causes the current flowing through the diode to decrease, thus reducing the voltage across the device and regulating it at a predetermined level.
Moreover, the 1N3347B is constructed of an anode and a cathode - both of which must be connected within a circuit. When voltage is applied to the diode, the anode acts as a PTYPE junction, allowing the electrons to flow from the anode to the cathode. This flow causes a voltage drop across the diode, and at certain levels, the Zener voltage is reached.
Once the Zener voltage is exceeded, a Zener breakdown takes place and the voltage is regulated at a constant level. The amount of current that can flow through the diode is limited due to the PN junction’s inherent voltage-dependent resistance.
The 1N3347B is an ideal type of diode for use in voltage regulation, as it is able to handle wide input voltage ranges and can protect components from excessive operating voltages.
