1N3903 is a general-purpose single rectifier diode mainly used for general rectification and other applications, especially for rectification of motor control circuits and other low power applications. Working Principle
1N3903 is a P-N junction diode. When no voltage is applied to it, the P and N type regions are separate and no current flows. If a voltage is applied to it in the forward direction, the depletion region around the P-N junction grows and current starts to flow. The current flow through the diode is due to the combination of holes and electrons (charge carriers) moving across the junction.
When a forward voltage is applied to the diode, it increases the conducting region across the P-N junction allowing current to flow in a forward direction. The current through the diode is limited by the diode\'s forward resistance as well as the external circuit resistance. The diode also acts as a voltage regulator by restricting the current to a maximum limit.
When a reverse voltage is applied to the diode, the current does not flow in the opposite direction. This is because the depletion region around the diode junction is not enough to support any current flow in the reverse direction. This function of restricting the flow of current in one direction is called rectification, and it is one of the main functions of 1N3903.
