Working Principle

The 1N3912R works on a principle called blocking. When no current is running the diode blocks any current. A diode will however allow current to flow in one direction only. This is achieved by the way the diode is constructed.

A diode is a semiconductor device with two terminals. One of the terminals is referred to as the anode and the other as the cathode. A PN junction is formed at the junction of these two terminals.

When the anode is made more positive than the cathode, then current begins to flow through the diode. This is because when the voltage applied becomes greater than the diode\'s breakdown voltage; the PN junction\'s depletion region collapses, allowing the current to flow through the diode.

On the other hand, if the voltage applied is less than the diode\'s breakdown voltage, the diode remains in its blocking position and the flow of current is blocked. This is referred to as a reverse polarity protection.
