The 1N4679 is a single silicon junction zener diode. This diode is designed for use in low-current, low-voltage applications such as TV sets, consumer electronics, and cellular phones. This device is available with a wide range of breakdown voltages, from 2.8V to 100V.
Zener diodes are used to provide a regulated voltage output. They work by allowing current to flow in one direction, so that the voltage across the diode remains relatively constant. Unlike standard diodes, a Zener diode allows current to flow in the opposite direction, when the voltage across it exceeds the breakdown voltage, thus creating a voltage drop across the diode.
