Working Principle of Zener Diode 1N4731AUR
All Zener diodes are basically made of two distinct junctions, an Anode (A)and a Cathode (K). The Anode is connected to the positive terminal or the load side, while the Cathode is connected to the negative terminal or the ground side of a circuit. Under normal operation, the majority of the electrical current will pass through the Anode so its terminal will be at the higher reference potential than the cathode. The forward bias voltage is applied to the Anode while the reverse bias voltage is applied to the Cathode.
In Zener diodes, the PN junction is made to break down at a predefined reverse bias voltage level, that is the Zener voltage. At this voltage level, the depletion layer will partially vanish and current will pass through it with little resistance. This is known as Zener breakdown. This enables current to flow in the reverse direction which is known as the Zener effect.
In the case of the 1N4731AUR Zener diode, as the applied peak reverse bias voltage (reverse operating voltage) is 0.5W, 5.1V, the flow of current will be through the PN junction. The Zener diode will breakdown at 5.1V, the voltage level will remain constant, and a huge amount of current will pass through it.
