Application field

The 1N4747AP/TR8 is suitable for applications such as power supply voltage regulation, voltage stabilization, voltage conditioning, avalanche protection, over-voltage protection, switching applications, as well as in audio and other circuits with zero design time. It is particularly suited for protection devices in low-voltage telecommunication systems.

Working Principle

Zener diodes, like the 1N4747AP/TR8 operate in the reversed-biased mode. This means that voltage is applied in reverse direction to anode and cathode of the junction. The applied voltage initially causes a certain amount of current to pass through the diode until the diode reaches its “threshold voltage” also called “Zener voltage”. At this point the power dissipated by the diode is kept at a constant level allowing a controlled amount of current to flow.

The limit for current flowing through the diode is determined by the resistance of the external circuit. When the circuit’s resistance is low enough, the current flowing through the diode will approach infinity, which can cause the diode to burn out. That is why in most cases it is of utmost importance to include Zener diodes in series with a resistor that limits the current that can flow through the load, otherwise the load and the supply will be destroyed.
