A 1N4747P/TR8 is a single, direct-coupled voltage regulator in the form of a standardised device that has been specified for the control of continuous conduction circuitry. It is a Zener diode and is used in such applications as voltage surge protection. It is also used as a voltage reference source in many circuits.
The main function of the 1N4747P/TR8 is to provide a stable, low-voltage reference point, even as the input voltage fluctuates. It does this by exploiting the characteristics of the Zener Diode. A Zener diode is constructed from a gate of N-type and P-type semiconductor material, and the N-type material forms a reverse or "Depletion" region. In this region, the holes left by electrons, become majority carriers and holes are inverted layers of electronic charge and are attracted to the nearest positively charged region.
The Zener diode is designed to operate within a narrow range between the breakdown voltage of the N-type material, and the breakdown voltage of the P-type material, often referred to as the Zener Voltage. In other words, when the input voltage reaches the Zener voltage, current actually flows away from the diode, resulting in a decrease in the forward voltage drop. This phenomenon is known as "Zener breakdown". The input voltage must remain above this Zener Voltage (Vz) for the device to remain stable.
When the input voltage is too low, for example when the load current drops, the P-type junction will break down and the current will flow from the P side to the N side to reduce the voltage across the diode. This will cause current to flow in the opposite direction and temporarily increase the output voltage until it reaches the Zener voltage once again. By continuously adjusting the output voltage in this way, the 1N4747P/TR8 is able to maintain a stable low-voltage reference point when the input voltage varies.
