Working Principle
Zener diodes operate under the principle of reverse current breakdown in a semiconductor diode. This is when a semiconductor such as a diode is operated in the reverse direction, current will start to flow from anode to cathode and the voltage across the diode falls until it reaches the Zener breakdown voltage. At this point the current through the diode increases rapidly and the voltage across the diode rises to a constant level. This constant voltage level then remains irrespective of the applied voltage and current through the diode.
When the diode is operated in its forward bias, the voltage drop across the diode is small because the majority of current passes through the chip. However, when the diode is operated in its reverse bias, the majority of current is blocked by the chip and instead flows through the more resistive depletion layer, causing the voltage drop across the diode to increase until it reaches the Zener breakdown voltage. At this point the diodes current begins to increase and the voltage across the diode becomes constant.
