Transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes protect electronic circuits from dangerous voltage transients induced by electrical overstress (EOS), lightning, and electrostatic discharge (ESD). The 1N6164A is a 5 W, unidirectional low capacitance TVS diode specifically designed for high-speed data line protection.

1N6164A Working Principle

The 1N6164A contains an enhanced Zener structure. When an excessive voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the transient voltage suppression device, electric current is conducted from the cathode to the anode, reducing the Vclamp voltage of the TVS diode. The typical reverse leakage current of the 1N6164A is 0.5 mA at 4.5 V. The device is available in both unidirectional and bidirectional configurations.

At the anode, current through the diode is limited by the on-state resistance of the Zener diode. This limits the maximum current that can flow through the 1N6164A to 5 W. Additionally, the TVS diode has a low capacitance rating of 1.2 pF, making it suitable for protecting RF and high-speed data lines from electrical overstress.

The 1N6164A is designed to dissipate a maximum surge power of 5 W per line, with a peak pulse current of 8 amps (Ipk) and a pulse width of 8/20 μs. This robust ESD protection device is capable of withstanding multiple transient surges, ensuring reliable long-term performance.

The working temperature range of this device is from −55°C to +150°C. The TVS diode is available in axial lead package and a variety of lead configurations, including straight and bent (a.k.a. J-bend). In addition, this device is RoHS compliant.
