1N6164US is an important device from the TVS - Diodes family. It is a transient voltage suppressor diode optimized for fast switching response, clamping performance, and breakdown voltage precision. Due to the careful design of the device, the voltage applied across the diode creates two voltage drops, one between the P-N junction and the N region and the other between the N region and the N-type region. As such, the breakdown voltage of the diode is the sum of both these drops.

The working principle of the 1N6164US diode is simple. When the applied voltage exceeds the maximum breakdown voltage of the device, the diode will conduct and clip the voltage at its clamping voltage. This effectively suppresses the potential overvoltage before it can cause any damage to the connected electronic circuits.
