Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes help protect electronic components from destructive voltage spikes and surges. The 1N6169A is a bidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode that offers excellent power and protection performance for low voltage applications. It is used to protect electronics from electrical overstress (EOS) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) conditions caused by short duration high-voltage transients.

The 1N6169A is designed for use in consumer electronics, mobile devices, automotive circuits, and other high-speed data and communications applications. The 1N6169A can also be employed in circuit protection against lightning storms, or to protect against over voltage conditions in battery-powered systems.

The 1N6169A is designed to protect against transients resulting from inductive/capacitive switching, lightning or electrostatic discharge. This device is usually connected in parallel with the protected load, and short duration transients are clamped to a safe operating voltage level. When triggered, the clamping voltage of the device is usually lower than the absolute maximum peak voltage specified. Since the voltage clamp of the device typically remains under the absolute maximum peak voltage rating, the device can be reset by simply removing the transient source.

The 1N6169A offers low maximum clamping voltage with low dynamic resistance characteristics, which helps the device to respond to fast transients and significantly reduce any resulting electrical noise. The device also offers high temperature operation, excellent repetitive peak power capability, and robust ESD immunity.

The 1N6169A works according to the principle of avalanche energy absorption. It is a voltage-dependent diode that has an abrupt junction, which clamps the applied voltage and reduces the peak voltage levels to a guaranteed maximum limit. The device functions by temporarily forming a low impedance, parallel conduction path between the two electrodes of the junction when the applied voltage exceeds the maximum breakdown voltage. This then diverts the current to the device, thus providing a safe and low voltage level for the device being protected.

The 1N6169A is constructed to withstand fast transient spikes of up to 1000W peak pulse power, with a clamp current of 500mA. The response time for this diode is generally less than 1 ns and the maximum nominal dynamic resistance is 1.0 Ohm. Its typical clamping voltage is 6.5V and the peak surge power is 250W.
