When a voltage transient occurs, the voltage across the diode may exceed the breakdown voltage of the diode. This causes current to flow through the diode, and the current is clamped to a safe level. The breakdown voltage of the 1N6290A is 16V.
The 1N6290A is rated for peak pulse current (IPP) of 8.3A for a 10/1000μs pulse. The device has a clamping voltage at IPP rated level of 33 V.
