The 1PMT4110/TR13 is a single Zener diode, which makes it not only useful in several applications, but also able to function in different ways. A Zener diode is a specialized type of diode which, due to its internal structure, is able to breakdown at a predetermined reverse voltage and: reverse bias, or voltage running through it in the opposite direction to normal behaviour; conduct in the opposite direction to regular diodes.
The most common use of these diodes is for voltage regulation, usually in applications where a voltage control is needed, and it is able to ensure a steady current and output no matter what the changing DC line voltage level is. As with all Zener diodes, the 1PMT4110/TR13 has its own specific operating limits and therefore is not designed for use in any applications other than its stated function. This diode has a power handling capability of up to 400 mW depending on its wattage rating at a range of reverse voltages.
This breakdown of voltage is determined by the amount of reverse bias it is subjected too. When the reverse bias exceeds the peak inverse voltage (PIV), the diode breakdown and will conduct in the opposite direction to normal current flow. The voltage is controlled by the internal built-in Zener impedance, allowing it to operate as a regulator. In addition, the 1PMT4110/TR13 can also be used as a protection diode. When exposed to a high voltage, its reverse breakdown voltage will open, clamshelling the external circuit and protecting it from damage.
When using a 1PMT4110/TR13, it is important to consider the environment it is located in as well. As this diode can be affected adversely by excessive heat, it should be installed in an area with regulated temperature.
