Variable capacitance diodes, also known as varicaps, varactors and var regulators, are four layer, semiconductor diodes which present capacitance varying with the reverse bias voltage applied to the junction. 1SV311(TPH3,F) is a type of low-capacitance varicaps and is used for intermediate frequency (IF) tuning and signal level control in receivers, transmitters and TV sets.

The working principle of 1SV311(TPH3,F) is based on a diode structure with a third junction formed by using a folded PN junction. This third junction presents a junction capacitance which is essentially dependent on the reverse bias voltage across the third junction. Varying the voltage alters the capacitance which in turn controls the transfer of electronic signals. This feature makes the varicap applicable to tune ceramic resonators and crystals to specific frequencies.

The variable capacitance function is the most important fact of 1SV311(TPH3,F). Since it is an ideal variable resistor, the varicap can be used to modulate frequency of the IF part of television and radio receivers, and to modulate FM sound carrier frequency in television sets. Additionally, this device can also be utilized in an oscillator to adjust frequency. In some TV sets, the varicap is utilized as an AGC (automatic gain control) circuit.
