Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are protection devices which are used to protect low voltage electrical circuits and other sensitive electronic equipment from damage caused by lightning, induction and power switching surges. GDT’s work by providing a controlled path for the high energy surge to be discharged into the ground instead of causing damage to the equipment.

Gas discharge tube arresters (GDT’s) come in a variety of shapes and sizes, such as flat plates, rods, and discs. They are designed to be installed between the protected circuit and the ground conductor to protect against dangerous over-voltages and power switching surges. They are typically constructed from ceramic materials containing a gas mixture which acts as an insulator when the voltage is low, but breaks down and conducts a high electrical current when the voltage is high. The resistive layer in the gas mixture creates a voltage dependent spark-over path which limits the voltage to the protected equipment.

The application field and working principle of 2015-42-SMH-RPLF gas discharge tube arrester can be divided into two parts according to its structure. The first part includes the structure of the arrester, mainly including insulator device, spark gap and metal shell. The insulator is made of high temperature porcelain material, and spark gap is a uniform arc of epoxy resin, when the voltage reaches a certain level, spark gap will produce uniform arc. The metal shell is used to protect the structural components and influence the electrical field distribution, in order to improve the breakdown characteristics.

The second part is concerned with the working principle of the 2015-42-SMH-RPLF GDT arrester. When the arrester is in steady state, the spark gap of the arrester has a certain voltage detection, and the insulator provides insulation function; when the ambient voltage increases, when the insulator withstand voltage is reached, the spark gap generates a uniform arc gap, which distributes the high voltage to the ground, so that the protected equipment will not be damaged. After the overvoltage disappears, the spark gap will automatically recover to the "on state", which can be said to be a kind of protective action.
