Gas discharge tube arresters (GDT), which are commonly known as surge arresters, are an important form of electrical equipment that is used to protect electronic devices from damaging power surges. A surge arrester is connected to the electronic device by two terminals that create a grounded path for electric current to move through when a surge of electric potential exceeds a predetermined threshold. GDTs are designed to protect electronic devices from sudden changes in electrical current, or short-term overvoltages, that could potentially damage or destroy them. GDTs are used to protect everything from circuit boards, transformers, motors, and communication systems to data storage systems, power supplies, and distribution networks.

One type of GDT is the 2015–35–A–RPLF (Resistor–polymer–low–frequency) surge arrester, which is designed specifically for applications where very low frequency (VLF) overvoltages are expected. A 2015–35–A–RPLF arrester has three main parts: an oxide pellet resistor, a gas filled tube, and a polymeric housing. The resistor is made from synthetic materials, including ceramics, quartz, and glass, which resist electrical current and high temperature fluctuations. The gas filled tube is filled with argon or nitrogen gas which can withstand electrical current but not heat. The polymer housing provides insulation against electrical current and also provides protection against mechanical damage.

The 2015–35–A–RPLF arrester is designed to protect against both transient and steady-state overvoltages. When there is a steady-state overvoltage, the resistor and gas filled tube act together to reduce the voltage that passes through the unit, thus protecting the connected device from the overvoltage. When there is a transient overvoltage, the resistor and gas filled tube act to reduce the peak voltage, while the polymeric housing dissipates the excess energy as heat.

The 2015–35–A–RPLF surge arrester is also designed to reduce energy spikes, protect against ground faults, and reduce the risk of electrical fire hazards. The resistor is designed to absorb and dissipate sudden spikes in voltage, while the gas filled tube acts to restrict the amount of current that passes through the unit during a fault. The polymer housing also acts to divert excess energy as heat away from the connected device.
