Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are an important class of surge protection devices used to protect sensitive electronic equipment fromvoltage transients caused by lightning strikes or other sources. These arresters typically consist of two parts that are connected by a tube of gas. The first part is the firing unit which contains an SMH-RPLF (Spark gap Multi Junction High-power Reverse Pulse Light Firing). The firing unit is responsible for initiating the spark gap by means of a high voltage pulse. The pulse voltage can be controlled using various settings, such as anode voltage, pulse width, and frequency.

The second part is the blocking capacitor that provides a low resistance path for the surge current. The capacitor is typically made of a combination of layered materials such as Mylar and ceramic, with a dielectric strength of several thousand volts. To protect against high currents, the capacitor is equipped with a high-amperage spark gap that provides an additional level of protection.

The working principle of the GDT is such that the SMH-RPLF initiates the spark gap in the firing unit, causing a current of several thousand amperes to flow through the capacitor and along the tube of gas. As the current passes through the tube, it increases the pressure of the gas, creating an electric arc that passes through the capacitor and is diverted to ground.

The arc not only dissipates the energy of the surge, but also disrupts its propagating waveform so that it cannot continue travelling along the power line. In most cases, the arc can be extinguished at less than a microsecond. Consequently, the surge is quickly reduced to a safe level and the sensitive equipment is protected.

The most common GDT application is for protection of electronic circuits from over-voltages caused by lightning strikes. The GDT can be attached directly to the power line, either upstream or downstream of the breaker. This will enable the GDT to detect and divert any surges that would otherwise harm the connected equipment. GDTs can also be used in combination with surge protectors. The surge protector will provide an additional level of protection against surges.
