Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are an important class of surge protection devices used to protect sensitive electronic equipment fromvoltage transients caused by lightning strikes or other sources. These arresters typically consist of two parts that are connected by a tube of gas. The first part is the firing unit which contains an SMH-RPLF (Spark gap Multi Junction High-power Reverse Pulse Light Firing). The most common GDT application is for protection of electronic circuits from over-voltages caused by lightning strikes. The GDT can be attached directly to the power line, either upstream or downstream of the breaker. This will enable the GDT to detect and divert any surges that would otherwise harm the connected equipment. GDTs can also be used in combination with surge protectors. The surge protector will provide an additional level of protection against surges.
