Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) arresters have been around since the 1950s and have been used in many applications to protect power systems and communication systems against lightning strokes and to reduce line outages. Engineers have been using these arrester devices for years to safeguard not only their telephone, cable television, and power systems but also other electronic equipment such as computers. The GDT is an electrical component that provides surge protection by limiting the voltage and dissipating energy in a process known as “clamping”. This process limits the amount of peak currents and voltages that can flow through the device, thus preventing them from damaging connected devices and equipment.
The GDTs use a two-element element structure consisting of a gas-filled or vacuum-sealed container-filled with an insulating gas or vaporized metal, which helps the GDT to function as a high-speed high voltage current limiter. When a high voltage or current surge occurs, atoms within the gas and/or vaporized metal become ionized which accelerates electrons across the gap forming an electrical conductor that limits the voltage within the device. The gap is small enough so that the voltage across it is kept in a safe level. Since the voltage across the arrester is limited, the device becomes effective in preventing damage to the systems and components connected to it.
To use GDTs effectively, engineers must select the arrester which is suitable for the application\'s voltage requirements, the environment in which the device must operate as well as the performance level and frequency ranges of the arrester. The GDTs are designed to operate in a wide range of environmental and electrical conditions. It is also important to note that the gas-filled GDTs are preferred over the vacuum-sealed ones because the former offers better response time and can withstand higher voltages.
The use of GDTs has grown significantly since the 1950s due to the advantages it offers. It offers improved system reliability and lower maintenance costs for components connected to them. GDTs can also save money as they may have a better success rate in preventing damage and also shutting down quickly enough when an overvoltage condition is detected. GDTs also provide a lower total cost of ownership than other protective systems and are more reliable in many applications.
GDTs have been used widely in the electrical and communication industry for many years and are now considered a standard method for protecting sensitive equipment. As technology advances, GDTs will continue to be used to protect equipment from harm and provide reliable performance in a variety of applications. GDTs are also a great option for providing protection against voltage fluctuations and surges and are well suited for use in applications with high levels of lightning.
Overall, Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDTs) are reliable and cost-effective protection solutions used extensively for electrical and communication networks. When arranged and installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s technical specifications, GDTs can provide excellent protection against lightning strokes, voltage fluctuations and outages, ensuring reliable performance and low maintenance costs.
