Gas Discharge Tube Arresters or GDT are devices used to protect electrical components from lightning and other electrical surges. These arresters are connected to electrical circuits or substations and divert any extra voltage into the ground to avoid any system overload. GDT are designed to conduct as normal resistive loads until an abnormally high voltage is detected. At that point, the internal capacitance of a GDT will break down, creating an electrical current and then quickly returning the system to its normal state.
The main purpose of GDT is to protect electrical systems from lightning, high voltage, and other possible surges or faults. Typical applications of GDT include overhead and underground utility lines, telephone and cable lines, building lightning protection, surge suppressors, televisions, refrigerators, and other household appliances.

When the tube is exposed to a surge or other high voltage, the electrons in the gas are accelerated, causing ionization, or a spark across the electrodes. This spark conducts the current away from the protected system and into the ground.
