Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs), also known as spark gaps, are devices used to protect electrical and electronic equipment from lightning-induced overvoltage damages. The typical GDTs consist of two steel bodies with a glass or ceramic envelope in between the bodies which form a spark gap or gap.
