Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)

Gas Discharge Tube arresters (GDTs) are an important class of surge protection devices (SPDs) that provide reliable, economical and long lasting protection from surges in power system networks. GDTs are used extensively in many industries from electrical power transmission and distribution (T&D), commercial-industrial, telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, and medical applications.GDTs date back more than 100 years and their basic construction remains essentially unchanged. They are a mixture of two metallic electrodes that are sealed in a quartz or glass tube filled with a heavily ionized gas. Additionally, when there is no surge, the GDTs carry no current, since they present a near-infinite resistance, except for a very small leakage current that can occur.GDTs offer superior protection from transient overvoltages because of their high-energy absorption capabilities, quick response time, and robust construction.
