Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT)

Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) arresters are engineered devices that are used in electrical systems to protect them against overvoltage and prevent or reduce damage caused by lightning. GDT arresters are an important tool in reducing system downtime and increasing service reliability.GDT arresters are primarily used to protect medium- and low-voltage power systems, including power and control wiring and cabling, circuit breakers, insulators, and other components from lightning-induced overvoltages. GDTs also help to protect human operators by limiting the surge of voltage in the event of a power system fault.GDTs are used in different types of applications, such as lightning protection on communication lines, high-powered motors, and solar photovoltaics. They are also used in circuits that are subjected to high voltage deformations. GDTs are passive components that are used to protect electrical circuits and equipment from voltage and current surges as a result of a fault or an external lightning strike. The arrester works by allowing some of the excess current to flow through the device and dispersing it along a large path, thus preventing the surge of voltage, which could be destructive, from entering the circuit.The working principle of GDT arresters is based on the fact that when an overvoltage passes through the device, the current causes a spark to occur in the device, which then dissipates the excess energy as heat and light. This process causes the arrester to be electrically neutral, thus protecting the circuit.GDT arresters are designed to be electrically active only when an over voltage is present. When there is no surge in voltage, the GDT arrester has no electrical activity, which makes it very efficient and reliable. GDT arresters are also used to protect important electrical and electronic components from the effects of localized Lightning strikes. This type of protection can be provided by utilizing various types of GDTs, such as conventional spark gap devices, vacuum interrupters, SCRs, vacuum spark gaps, metal oxide arresters, and silicon avalanche arresters. The construction of GDT arresters usually consists of two cells, one high voltage and one low voltage, connected in series. A voltage divider is connected to each cell, which allows the arrester to divert the current flowing through it when an overvoltage occurs. When the overvoltage is not present, the GDT arrester acts as insulation between the high voltage and low voltage cells, allowing the low voltage cell to remain safe. When there is an overvoltage surge, the voltage divider will separate the currents and the GDT arrester will allow the overvoltage to be dispersed to a safe level.GDT arresters are reliable, cost-effective, and easy to install. They are available in a variety of sizes and voltage ratings, making them suitable for use in a wide range of applications, including residential, commercial, and industrial settings. GDT arresters can be used in combination with other power protection devices, such as surge protection devices, power filters, and power conditioners, to provide combined protection against expensive power interruptions and equipment failure. GDT arresters are highly reliable and energy efficient. They require little maintenance and have a long operational life, making them an economical way to protect important electrical and electronic components from damage caused by overvoltage or lightning.
