TVS - Diodes

TVS diode, which stands for Transient Voltage Suppression, is a form of diode that is applied to protect sensitive electronic devices from voltage spikes. TVS diodes are specially designed to provide improved electrical protection against transient over-voltages or surges. TVS diodes are usually made up of two or more p-n junction diodes connected in parallel, and have controlled breakdown voltages that are much higher than the normal silicon diode.

The 20KPA180-B is a unidirectional TVS diode that is designed to provide protection against high voltage transients. It is capable of handling high surge peak and clamping voltages up to 180 volts. It can also provide protection against electro-static discharge (ESD) up to 20kV. The 20KPA180-B has a fast response time of less than 1 nanosecond. 20KPA180-B Application Fields and Working Principle

The 20KPA180-B TVS diode is designed for portable consumer electronics, metering and instrumentation devices, telecommunications, and automotive applications.

The 20KPA180-B protects by clamping the transient voltage to the breakdown (=clamping) voltage. In normal operation, the TVS diode is in a non-conducting state with very low leakage current. During a transient over-voltage condition, the current flowing through the diode increases exponentially at a given rate, up to the maximum current rating. As a result, the voltage across the diode is clamped at the breakdown voltage, due to the exponential increase of current. This prevents further rise of input voltage, and preserves the circuit from over-voltage damage.

The 20KPA180-B TVS diode is capable of withstanding a peak pulse power of 1.4kW and a pulse width of 10/1000μs. It features an excellent surge current rating of 30.0A and a thermal resistance of 100°C/W. It is available in a small and space-saving form factor ofSOD-123, and with standard ESD protection of 20kV, making it an ideal choice for protecting sensitive electronic circuits from transient over-voltages.
