20KP020A Application Field and Working Principle
TVS diodes, also known as Transient Voltage Suppression Diodes, are components designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from high energy transients that occur during a power surge. 20KP020A is an example of this type of diode used widely for TVS applications. Working Principle:
When the TVS diode is exposed to an overvoltage and/ or an overcurrent surge, the diode begins to conduct current thus clamping the voltage to a safe level and protecting the sensitive electronic components from the surge. The diode then blocks current from passing through and allows the surge to dissipate. TVS diodes, like the 20KP020A, are designed to absorb a large amount of energy from the surge and conduct the energy safely to ground.
The flow of surge current through the diode causes a voltage drop across it, which in turn causes the diode to conduct and clamp the voltage to a safe level. This process is repeated each time the diode is exposed to a surge until the energy dissipates to a safe level.
