TVS diodes, or Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS), are part of a growing group of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and surge protection solutions. TVS diodes provide protection from the damaging effects of transient over-voltages and ESD, and are well-suited for a variety of applications. Especially, 20KPA28C is one of the commonly used TVS diodes which offers robust protection against common transient events. The bidirectional 20KPA28C TVS is suitable to provide protection from transient overvoltages with a wide variety of technologies, such as ethernet, automotive, and data switches. It also can provide protection for memory modules, input and output lines, digital lines, and power supplies where a common-mode transient voltage protection is needed.
Working Principles
The 20KPA28C TVS is designed to protect electrical circuits from damaging high energy transients, such as high voltage spikes, or ESD. It works by clamping a voltage spike to a safe level before it can cause any damage to the circuit. The device provides voltage clamping action for common mode ESD transients, and also protects against over-voltage transients. When exposed to an over-voltage surge, the TVS will clamp the voltage and absorb the surge current, dissipating it in the form of heat.
When the over-voltage surge voltage reaches the clamping voltage of the 10KPA28C, which is usually around 22 volts, the device can absorb a high amount of current before the voltage starts to drop to the breakdown voltage. This process allows the current to be diverted away from the sensitive circuit, providing the desired protection. The 10KPA28C TVS works by limiting the voltage spike, defectively producing a loss in voltage across the device, which generates a current. This current is then dissipated as heat energy.
Besides, 10KPA28C TVS also provides a high level of capacitive shunting action. This is when the current is diverted away from the load the moment it sees the incoming transient. When the transient pulse is completed, the TVS is biased back off to allow current to flow as usual. Therefore, the TVS also helps to protect the load device from over-voltage transients.
