Temperature Sensors - NTC ThermistorsNTC thermistors are widely used temperature sensors that are composed of a sintered semiconductor material, usually based on metal oxides. NTC thermistors have the ability to rapidly and accurately measure temperature changes with great sensitivity. NTC thermistors are the most commonly used type of temperature sensitive device, due to their reliability, low cost and small size.The application field of NTC thermistors is extensive and includes the automotive industry, aerospace, medical, engineering, research and development, and many other industries. NTC thermistors can be used in applications such as thermostats, temperature sensors, temperature control systems, and as part of safety systems. They are also used to measure light, humidity, pressure and gas composition.NTC thermistors have a unique working principle which makes them ideal for use as temperature sensors. The resistance of the thermistor varies with temperature, and this allows the sensor to detect and convert temperature changes into electrical signals that can be measured or used for control purposes.NTC thermistors consist of an electrical resistive element that is sandwiched between two electrodes and encased in an insulating material. The resistive element is usually made up of a sintered semiconductor material, such as polycrystalline ceramic, a metal oxide, or a metallic film.The working principle of NTC thermistors is based on the fact that the resistance of the thermistor material changes when the temperature changes. NTC thermistors are voltage dependent devices, which means that they will respond to changes in voltage as well as to changes in temperature. This makes them well suited for static or dynamic applications.When exposed to a temperature change, the resistance of the NTC thermistor will either increase or decrease depending on whether the temperature is increasing or decreasing from the baseline temperature. As the temperature increases, the resistance decreases, and as the temperature decreases, the resistance increases. This relationship between resistance and temperature is known as the “negative temperature coefficient” (NTC).NTC thermistors can also be used as current sensors. When a current is passed through the thermistor, the voltage drop across the thermistor is proportional to the resistance, and as such is also proportional to the temperature. This principle can be used to construct a highly sensitive temperature control system.NTC thermistors can also be used as temperature switches, where a setpoint temperature can be set which acts as a trigger point. When the temperature exceeds the setpoint, the switch is triggered, indicating that the temperature has exceeded the setpoint. This type of temperature switch can be used for applications such as heaters, cooling systems and safety systems.Overall, NTC thermistors are widely used temperature sensors.
