The SPI protocol consists of four distinct signals that can be used for different operations such as read, write, program, and erase. When the ALE signal is asserted, the serial data input is latched on the trailing edge of the falling edge of the SCLK signal. During a read/write operation, data is shifted out on the rising edge of SCLK and latched on the trailing edge of the falling edge of SCLK. Data is then stored in the EEPROM device until it is read or written. The write cycle is initiated by asserting the write enable signal and followed by a write instruction and the data to be programmed / erased. The READ operation is initiated by asserting the READ signal and the data is shifted out on the rising edge of the SCLK signal. The write enable/disable register and status register allow data to be protected from accidental programming and allow the user to easily check if the write/erase functions are successful.
