Gas discharge tube arresters (GDT) are an important component of modern electrical distribution systems. They are used to protect electrical equipment from damaging over-voltages. A GDT is a nonlinear metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) device which limits the voltage by breaking down in response to an over-voltage condition. This breakdown creates a resistive zone which limits the voltage to protect the equipment.
GDTs are used in a variety of applications including telecoms, oil and gas, electric utility systems, and data centers. In telecom applications, GDTs are used to protect transmission and reception systems from lightning surges and power line transients. In electric utility systems, GDTs are used to protect sensitive equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and other components from lightning strikes and over-voltage conditions. In oil and gas applications, GDTs are used to protect equipment and pipelines from electrical disturbances and provide isolation for upstream and downstream equipment.
The working principle of a GDT is based on the ability of a metal oxide layer to conduct current at a predetermined voltage. When subjected to a voltage higher than the breakdown voltage, the voltage-dependent resistive layer creates a high-resistance path for the current, limiting the voltage across the device.
GDTs are typically classified into three types: nonlinear, linear, and transient. Nonlinear GDTs are used primarily for low-voltage applications. They are designed to break down at a specific voltage and provide a reliable and consistent level of protection. Linear GDTs are designed for higher voltage applications and can be adjusted to different breakdown voltages. Transient GDTs are designed to respond quickly to rapid changes in voltage and can be used in applications which require short pulse protection.
GDTs are manufactured from a variety of materials including glass, porcelain, and plastic. The choice of material is usually determined by the environment in which the GDT will be used and the type of electrical stress expected. Glass-tube GDTs are the most widely used and are available in various sizes for different applications. Porcelain-body GDTs are used in high-voltage applications and require careful installation to ensure a reliable connection. Plastic-body GDTs are lightweight and require less material, making them well suited for applications which require frequent moves or relocations.
GDTs provide an effective and reliable way of protecting electrical equipment from over-voltage conditions. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install and can be used in a variety of applications. However, it is important to ensure that the correct type of GDT is selected for the particular application and that the device is installed in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
