Working Principle

Power relays, like all electronic components, have a unique set of characteristics that determine their operation, ranging from the type of contacts used, to the type of current they can handle. In general, power relays are designed to operate using either dry or wet contacts, meaning the contact points are either electrically conductive or insulated.

When powered up, power relays will energize the control unit, and then the control unit will activate the contact points, allowing either electrical current to flow or stop the electrical current. Depending on the relay’s configuration, the contact points can either handle AC or DC current.

The control unit is powered by either an AC or DC voltage, and the voltage will determine the current input for the relay. If the current exceeds the rating of the relay, current will not be allowed to flow and the relay will turn off. If the current is less than the rating, then the control unit will allow the current to flow through the contact points.
