2C1UM technology is a form of fibreoptic sensing technology that can be used to measure strain, vibration and pressure in industrial environments. Originally developed in the late 1990’s, it is now used in a variety of applications including the oil and gas, automotive, aerospace, telecommunication and medical fields. It has also been used in the monitoring of hazardous environments, such as in nuclear power plants.
2C1UM stands for “Twin-Channel to Confederation Coherent Opto-Mechanical Sensor”. The technology consists of two fiberoptic cables that are joined together to form a loop, which is then connected to a sensor. The sensor is then placed under strain with two input channels On the other end of the loop is a receiver, or “end point”. The end point is responsible for collecting data from the loop and translating it into a readable form.
Essentially, each cable in the loop acts as a strain gauge. The two cables can be placed in different orientations as well, allowing the system to measure strain in two directions and determine the difference between them. This allows the system to measure very small strains on the materials under test.
In applications where the strain applied to the material is too small to be measurable with traditional strain gauges, 2C1UM technology provides a reliable, low-cost solution. 2C1UM technology has also been used to measure shear stress, temperature and pressure in a variety of applications. Also, since the cables can be buried in a material, it is ideal for monitoring dynamic and hidden strain.
The work principle behind 2C1UM technology is based on the idea that as a strain is applied to a material, it causes changes in the refractive index and phase of light travelling along the length of the cable. This change is measured by the end point, which is equipped with an optical receiver. The receiver can detect even the smallest changes in refractive index and phase.
This information is collected and sent back to a controller, where it is translated into understandable data. The data can be used to identify strain or it can be used to trigger alarms when the strain reaches a certain threshold. Additionally, the data can also be used to monitor the integrity of the material being monitored, ensuring that it does not exceed its maximum allowable strain.
2C1UM technology is an extremely reliable and cost-effective form of fibreoptic sensing technology that can be used in a variety of industrial applications. Its ability to measure strain, pressure and vibration makes it ideal for monitoring dynamic environments. Additionally, its ease of implementation and low implementation costs make it attractive to many industries.
