Thyristors - SCRs are solid-state devices that are used to switch, control and protect circuits in various applications. The 2N1916 is the SCR of the 2N3000 family, produced by VISHAY, a global manufacturer of passive electrical components. It has a reverse blocking voltage of up to 1600V, a maximum gate control current of 20mA and a forward continuous current of 35A. The 2N1916 is used in many industrial and home applications, such as motor drives, power supplies, over-voltage/over-current protection, AC & DC Motor control and Automotive. Its two most notable features are its high blocking voltage and low turn-on voltage. This makes it ideal for use in high-voltage applications where a low gate control current is required, such as power controllers and over-voltage/over-current protection.When the voltage at the gate is less than the required turn-on voltage, the gate of the SCR remains open and no current flows through the device. Once the voltage is increased to or above the turn-on voltage, the device turns-on, causing current to flow between the Anode and Cathode. The gate remains open until the voltage is removed, or the current between the Anode and Cathode falls below the holding current. At this point, the SCR turns-off and current no longer flows through the device. The 2N1916 is often used in applications where the SCR is a current-controlled switch. This means that, when the current exceeds a certain threshold, the 2N1916 will turn-on and allow current to flow through the device, keeping the current within the set limits. This is often used in applications such as motor controllers and power supplies. In addition to its current-controlled switch functions, the 2N1916 also has anti-parallel diodes for over-voltage/over-current protection. These diodes are connected in series with the SCR or Transistor, and provide protection against transient voltage and current surges. The 2N1916 SCR is used in various applications that require a reliable and dependable switching device.
