Modern electronic technology needs reliable transistors as basic components for strong operational performance, so that all the plays, radios, televisions and computers can work as expected. However, with the increasing complexity of the circuit requirements, the selection of better unipolar transistors is getting more and more difficult. In order to meet complex circuit requirements, the integrated circuit of bipolar junction transistor (32.504) has become an essential option for designers. Bipolar junction transistors (BJT) are three-terminal solid-state devices made up of semiconductor materials which control the flow of electrons and holes between terminals. 32.504 is an N-channel BJT (N channel refers to the positive supply voltage) which can be used as a switch, amplifier or oscillator in electronic circuits.
The application fields of 32.504 include industrial control, consumer electronics, automotive electronics, medical instrumentation, telecommunications and defense systems. Generally, 32.504 can be applied to amplify, switch, or act as electrically operated relays and switches, as well as used as an oscillator due to its high voltage and current capacity and fast switching speed. In other words, applications mainly depend on the characteristics of 32.504 two main operations, which are, a) saturation and b) cut-off.
Saturation mode is when the transistor is in a fully "on" state, i.e., maximum current flowing between output and input. This mode is commonly used in switching applications like driving high voltage power devices like relay coils, high power lamps and in switching of signal levels. On the other hand, the cut-off mode is when the transistor is in a fully "off" state, i.e., no current flow between output and input. This mode is mostly used in amplifying applications, for example, the transistor can be used as an amplifier to amplify low level input signal to large power output. But in cases where a high voltage (>10V) is to be applied, the BJT must be connected in reverse bias mode.
The working principle of 32.504 mainly involves three major parts: base, emitter and collector. A BJT consists of two diodes connected back to back and this junction between them is called the base-emitter junction (BE) and the other junction between the emitter and collector is called base-collector junction (BC). The base terminal is used to control the current flow through both junctions (BE and BC). When a positive voltage is applied to the base, electrons are injected from the base into the emitter which in turn pushes some of the electrons towards the collector, thus allowing current to flow. When the faster moving electrons reach the collector, they recombine with holes in the collector. The injected hole into the collector decreases with decreasing base voltage making it difficult to maintain the current through both junctions and thus, turning the transistor off.
The reverse bias mode of BJT can be used to turn it on with a decreased voltage. A reverse bias applies a negative voltage to the base which in turn blocks current to flow from emitter to base. This negative voltage causes a majority of holes to be created at the base which then attracts electrons from the emitter and forms a large junction capacitor between the two. This increases the potential barrier across the BE junction, thus increasing the flow of current from emitter to collector and thus, turns the BJT on.
In conclusion, 32.504 is a powerful and versatile bipolar junction transistor which is used for many applications. It can be used as a switch, amplifier or oscillator in various circuits depending on its two main modes – saturation and cut-off. By applying the correct voltage to the base-emitter junction of a 32.504 BJT, a designer can control the flow of current and create circuits with desired characteristics.
