Film Capacitors

Film capacitors, also called plastic film capacitors, are passive components composed of two electrodes, and a dielectric material like polyester, polypropylene, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and others. The dielectric materials used in their construction produce a high capacitance value in a relatively small package—much higher than the same-sized ceramic capacitor. Film capacitors come in both radial and axial lead packages and surface mount configurations.

35ST106MD35750 application field and working principle

The 35ST106MD35750 is a popular plastic film capacitor offering a capacitance value of 10µF, with a dielectric type of polyester. Suggested applications include audio and guitar tone compensation, coupling, bypass, blocking, and decoupling.

These capacitors work on the principle of electrostatics. When a voltage is applied across the plates, the opposite charges on the plates create a potential difference, or voltage drop unlike charges attract each other causing the electric field between two plates to increase in an exponential manner.

In a simple capacitor, the two electrodes of a capacitor are separated from each other with a dielectric material. The dielectric in the 35ST106MD35750 is polyester, which is also known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It has a high dielectric constant permitting smaller size capacitors with a high capacitance value.

The polyester dielectric in the 35ST106MD35750 is also very stable and performs consistently even after wide temperature excursions and high voltage application. Its temperature stability makes it suitable to applications that require stability over temperature changes such as audio compensation circuitry or any other type of circuit requiring stability over temperature.

In addition to its high stability, the 35ST106MD35750 also has a dielectric dissipation factor of 0.0005 or less making it a low-loss dielectric. This low-loss dielectric will allow the capacitor to remain in the circuit with minimal losses. With a maximum voltage rating of 350V AC, the 35ST106MD35750 is appropriate for a variety of circuits in the audio, industrial, and consumer electronics markets.
