38.204 is a 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard that specifies the overall structure, the requirements for data transmission and an applicable air interface protocol of an evolved digital mobile telecommunications system as part of its evolution from Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The standard is also known as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and gives the specifications for the Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA) as well as the Generic Access Network (GAN).
The 38.204 standard details the requirements for using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna technologies in the 3GPP system. MIMO is building in multiple antennas in the transmitter and receiver nodes of the device. The application of this technology allows the system to optimize communication by making best use of the available channel conditions. It also help reduce interference and interference noise.
The application of 38.204 lies in the application of MIMO technology which is being extensively used in modern wireless communication technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G mobile networks. The multiple antennas are used to send and receive data in a much more efficient way, as compared to using just one antenna. OFDM channels are designed to give small changes in frequency during transmission of the data, which makes them much more resilient to noise. Data is transmitted with channel coding techniques for error correction as well as FEC (Forward Error Correction) coding.
The transmitted data is then received by the receiver, where it undergoes demodulation to separate out the data stream from the noise. The data stream is then decoded using the channel coding, modulation and coding schemes specified in the 38.204. The received data is then reconstructed to the original form and is ready to be used.
