Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are one of the most common types of capacitors used today. They are composed of two electrodes held in close proximity by an electrolyte. The electrodes are usually made from aluminum or other conductive metals and the electrolytes are generally an acidic solution. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in many applications including power supplies, DC motor control and filtering.
The unique feature of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is its high capacitance, which is attributed to its cylindrical construction. This allows for an increased surface area on the electrodes, thus increasing the capacitance of the capacitor. The capacitance is measured in Farads (F) and units of microFarads (μF). The most common application of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is in power supplies, where they are used for peak current protection, filtering and rectification.
