Introduction

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, sometimes referred to as “electrolytics”, are polarized capacitors in which the anode is made of an aluminum foil or film that has an oxide layer on its surface. This oxide layer acts as the dielectric and a liquid electrolyte with a high permittivity is used to impregnate the anode. A typical aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of one or more anode foils, cathode foils separated by separator tissue, an outer aluminum casing and a liquid electrolyte.
