Working Principle

The 3EZ140D2/TR12 is based on the conception of “Zener Breakdown”. It works like a common rectifying diode, but it has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a normal diode. Zener Breakdown is a process that occurs when an electric field is applied to the junction of a p-n semiconductor material. At a certain electric field intensity, the electrons in the n-type material become so energetic that they tunnel across the p-n junction and recombine with the holes in the p-type material.

When the reverse voltage is lower than the Zener voltage breakdown, the diode is depleted and reacts linearly. It acts as though its resistance is infinite, thus preventing current flow. However, when the reverse voltage exceeds the Zener voltage, electrons tunnel across the junction and the Zener begins to conduct. This is known as Zener Breakdown.
