3EZ62D2/TR12 Application Field and Working Principle

Working Principle

Zener diodes, such as the 3EZ62D2/TR12, are designed to conduct current in one direction when a certain voltage threshold is reached. When the zener voltage, or breakdown voltage is reached, the diode has become “forward biased” and will allow current to flow between the anode (positive) and cathode (negative) terminals. This current flow is limited only by the external circuit, as the zener diode itself has no inherent limitation. This is a key difference between zener and regular silicon diodes. Regular silicon diodes will typically only allow current to flow in the anode to cathode direction, and the current is limited by the diode\'s junction impedance.

The 3EZ62D2/TR12 diode has a maximum reverse voltage of 62V. This means that when the voltage across the diode exceeds 62V, the diode will conduct current in the opposite direction (from cathode to anode). This reverse current flow is limited to a maximum of 500mW, as that is the maximum power dissipation rate of the diode. This prevents the diode from being damaged by excessive current.
