Working Principle

Zener diodes work in the same way as traditional diodes– when the current flowing through the device is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction, it is blocked. Whenever a reverse voltage input is greater than the breakdown voltage, current will flow through the diode in the reverse direction. When the voltage is lower than the breakdown voltage, the diode will act as an ordinary diode, however, because the Zener diodes have a wider bandgap that allows the electron-hole pairs generated to move further, and be more easily extracted from higher voltage. This is why it is said that the Zener diode has a negative temperature coefficient.
