TVS - Diodes are special electronic components used to protect sensitive electronic equipment from damage caused by transients. They are basically used for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. TVS - Diodes can also be used for EMI/RFI filtering, over-voltage protection, low leakage current protection, and power spark protection. They are used extensively in industrial, military, consumer and medical applications.

3KASMC13AHE3_B/I is one of the latest TVS – Diodes developed by Wotutronix. It has been designed primarily to provide ESD protection in applications such as computer, Ethernet and telecom ports. The device is a single-line bidirectional diode, with a low capacitance between the anode (A) and cathode (B).

The maximum operational voltage of the 3KASMC13AHE3_B/I is described in two parts. The first is the Stand-off Voltage (VR) which is the working voltage where the diode does not conduct and no current passes through the diode. This voltage is specified in IEC 61000-4 standards and ranges from 8 to 16 volts. The limit is measured at the junction of the diode and the circuit under test. The second part is the Peak Pulse Current (IPP) which is the maximum allowed current thr­ough the diode without damage. The specified IEC 61000-4 Limit defines this limit to be 17.8 A. This current is considered to be the worst-case condition, meaning it should never exceed that level.

In operation, the 3KASMC13AHE3_B/I works by clamping the voltage when an over-voltage transient occurs. This is achieved by clamping the current to a point where the total energy associated with the event is limited. When an accident occurs, the diode will respond to the transient and reduce the voltage effectively. It can then be reset to allow the device to continue working without any damage. 3KASMC13AHE3_B/I is also capable of suppressing electrostatic discharges (ESDs) up to ±15kV in accordance with IEC 61000-4-2 standards.
